Hungry Eyes

Updated: Jun 13, 2022

One common question we are asked is what food will we eat during the crossing. We will each burn around 5000-6000 calories per day so trying to find lightweight, calorie dense foods that can be stomached at sea has required a fair amount of trial and error. Thankfully we were working alongside FoodFit for our land based nutrition and Torq Fitness & Supersapiens for our performance nutrition.

Below we will take you through what we are taking across the Atlantic. The food has been carefully weighed and stored in individual day packs, one for main meals and one for snacks. Race rules dictate that a pair has to take 65 days worth of food and each day must carry at least 60 calories/kg/day. These are kept in storage lockers below our rowing seats and contribute to a significant amount of weight. Our ocean rowing boat weighs 350kg but with all our equipment and meals our race weight will be around 1000kg. In case our water-maker malfunctions, 20% of our food will be wet rations that can be eaten instantly.

We are incredibly grateful to the Swindon Academy at the Great Western Hospital for purchasing a large proportion of our freeze dried meals for us.

We are also being supported by The Nomads Kitchen who have supplied us with a bespoke spice pack to give variety to our meals. Check them out here: www.thenomadskitchens.com

Weight loss in the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge has previously been between 3-18kg (usually 5-10% body mass) but we want to minimise this as much as possible in order to stay healthy and recover well.
